ATM cards from US Bank in Italy
Will I be able to take money out of any ATM in Italy with my US ATM card and use my US debit card?

Than you so much for your response Robespierre. I am with a very small bank with no international locations and while it has Visa debit card capacity I worry something will happen while I am overseas not allowing me to take money out. Also wondering how much of a fee the US bank will charge from taking money out of an ATM.

Check the back of your ATMN card. If it has Cirrus, Maestro, Plus...these are all international networks that will allow you to withdraw cash from your checking account.

One more thing -- be sure to notify your US bank, before you leave home, that you will be withdrawing from an overseas location. This sometimes triggers a security alert if you don't tell your bank in advance.

Do a search here on "ATM". This question comes up regularly and there have been many long discussions on this topic.

Thanks to you all!
So then if I do not have any of those things - Cirrus, Maestro, then I will not be able to use the atm card? I will do a search!

Hi D,
>if I do not have any of those things - Cirrus, Maestro,
What does it say on the back of your card?
>how much of a fee the US bank will charge from taking money out of an ATM.
Ask your bank.
Do you have only the debit card, or do you have a charge card as well?

If you have a Visa or Master Card debit, chances are near 100% that you will be able to find somewhere to get cash with it. An ATM card - maybe 50%.
I think the best way to use a debit card in Europe is to get cash with it and make most day-to-day purchases with the cash (because not all merchants' employees are honest, and handing them your numbers can be dangerous). Using the ATM physically attached to the bank is probably best in case there's a problem - in addition, many banks have ATM booths you can go into for privacy and security.
