Guy Ritchie's next movie In The Grey features some of the most popular lead actors in his illustrious filmography. Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill are teaming up for Ritchie's next movie In The Grey, an action film set for a January 2025 release. Eiza González, who was in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare alongside Cavill, will star in the upcoming Ritchie film as well. Gyllenhaal recently starred in Ritchie's war drama The Covenant, which is the director's highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes. Guy Ritchie's two most recent movies, The Covenant and Ungentlemanly Warfare, were beloved by audiences despite both being office flops.

In The Grey is expected to be released on January 17, 2025 and is currently in post-production. The story revolves around two extraction specialists, played by Cavill and Gyllenhaal, who have to plan an escape route for a senior female negotiator, likely González. The film will also star Fisher Stevens (Succession), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl, Saltburn), and Jason Wong (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves). Based on its intriguing premise that lays the foundation for an intense thriller, and the combination of Gyllenhaal, González, and Cavill, In The Grey is poised to be one of Ritchie's best movies.

The five films come off the $1.05 billion box office smash Aladdin, which remains Ricthie's highest-grossing film by a long shot, and the 43rd highest-grossing movie of all time. In The Grey won't scratch Aladdin's box office total but should be one of Ritchie's more profitable movies in recent years.

Both The Covenant and Ungentlemanly Warfare have the highest audience ratings for a Guy Ritchie movie since Aladdin. By the numbers alone, both of these films should have done better at the box office, and it appears that Ritchie is fully aware of this with his casting for In The Grey. The fact that Ritchie is doubling down with the same two actors of his recent flops is bold but is reaffirmed by their combined favor among audiences. Adding González to the mix should hopefully inspire a box-office comeback with In The Grey. Ritchie may not have much left to prove as a filmmaker, but he is certainly due for another box office smash.

Putting Cavill and Gyllenhaal in a Guy Ritchie action thriller sounds like a dream come true and an infallible way for Ritchie to make a big box office comeback. Adding González will be the cherry on top after her recent success in action projects like Godzilla vs. Kong, Ambulance, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The combined star power of Cavill, Gyllenhaal, and González is more than enough to draw audiences to theaters, which makes me hopeful that In The Grey will avoid a straight-to-streaming rollout strategy and get a proper theatrical release, despite Ricthie's recent box office struggles.

Gyllenhaal is fresh off his first-ever lead role in a television series with Apple's celebrated legal drama Presumed Innocent, which was recently renewed for a second season. Cavill made a hilarious cameo as the Cavillrine in the summer box office blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, while González, who rose to prominence from her role in 2017's Baby Driver, recently starred as Auggie Salazar in the Emmy-nominated Netflix series 3 Body Problem. In The Grey is the next big project on deck for all three A-list actors and January 2025 can't come soon enough.

Ritchie is due for a box office hit

Even though Ritchie's last movies weren't very successful from a commercial standpoint, the combined talent in In The Grey should be enough to get Ritchie back on track. The Gentleman fared well at the box office, earning $115 million worldwide against a $22 million budget, while Wrath of Man's box office was just okay, earning $104 million worldwide with a $40 million budget. While there's not much known about In The Grey as of the time of writing, a teaser or trailer for the film should become available sometime in the Fall if the film stays on course for its mid-January 2025 release date. It's certainly one of my most-anticipated films for 2025.
