What is the difference between a U1 and an U1R battery? ›

The main difference between these two types of batteries is their terminal position. Group U1L mower batteries have a positive terminal in the left-hand corner towards the top of the battery. Group U1R batteries, on the other hand, have a positive terminal located on the upper right-hand side.

The vast majority of lawn mower batteries are all very similar and part of the U-1 group size. These consist of U1, U1-R (reverse posts) and the rarer U1-3 which is simply a higher cranking amp version. When it comes to their ratings, you'll notice that most batteries are rated according to their size.

If your lawn mower battery won't hold a charge, verify connections are clean and tight first, then connect it to the charger. If it isn't fully charged within 8 hours, your battery is dead and you'll need to replace it. If your lawn mower battery does charge fully, the charge should not drain if it is not in use.

A lawn mower battery will have a much lower number of CCAs than a typical auto battery. For most mowers you'll want a battery with a minimum rating of 145 CCA. Your owner's manual or the manufacturer's website will supply you with the correct CCA specifications for your mower.

Set it for 12 volts, which is the standard in the industry. Most lawn and garden devices have this voltage rating as a way to keep consumers safe from any shock. Allow the charger to power up the battery for up to eight hours. It should have a full charge by this time.

There's no risk of overcharging – a battery tender (or trickle charger) brings the battery up to a full charge, then supplies just enough current to keep it there indefinitely. (Called a float/maintenance charge mode.) A battery tender can be hooked up and unhooked at your discretion.
